Why VLCC rates reached almost $50000 in Spring 2012
April 2012 saw VLCC rates reach nearly $50,000, doubling rates we saw in February. Why the increase? Is this sustainable?
A recent RS Platou presentation indicates “combination of a surprisingly high growth in seaborne crude oil volumes as well as in transport distances resulted in a ton-mile growth for crude of 8 to 9 percent in the first quarter of 2012 compared to the same quarter last year.”

Teekay Tankers Sees Rates Rise
In a recent Reuters article, Teekay Tanker’s CEO Bruce Chan indicates "This quarter rates in general have been up... we expect this quarter to be better than the first quarter last year."
“Overall for this year, we think that the supply and demand picture for tankers is balanced," said Chan. Teekay Tankers shares were trading up 11 percent on Friday afternoon on the New York Stock Exchange.
